“Semi-custom” is not a universal specification. Two servers using the label can feel completely different, so the useful questions are what has changed, why it changed, and whether the rules are explained before you invest time.
What should you check before downloading?
Treat every private server as an independent service. A professional website is useful, but it is not proof by itself. Slow down and check the basics first.
1. Use the operator's official download page
Avoid clients reuploaded to video descriptions, file-sharing sites, direct messages, or unofficial mirrors. Confirm the domain and use the download published by the server itself.
2. Create a completely unique password
Never reuse a password from Old School RuneScape, RuneScape, email, Discord, banking, or another private server. An RSPS should never ask for your official-game credentials.
3. Look for visible development and support
Read the update log, check whether support channels work, and see whether the team explains downtime or major changes. A public history is more useful than vague promises about future content.
4. Understand the progression policy
Check experience rates, account modes, resets, wipes, drop-rate rules, and whether progress is persistent. These details affect every hour you put into the game.
5. Review purchases before paying
Optional purchases should identify what is delivered, how delivery works, and where the applicable terms can be read. Do not assume one server's store rules apply to another.
Does RuneLite work on an RSPS?
Support varies by server. Some private servers offer a client with RuneLite-style features or compatible plugins; others use a different client entirely. A plugin available on one server may be absent, restricted, or changed on another.
